Kiwi Crusade Route
imagesThe 6 daily stages will vary between 70-90km’s and can be completed by well prepared riders from novices to the experts. With around 9600m total climbing you will need to have done some training.

The main race route will start and finish from the historical, seaside town of Whakatane.

Towns and race villages are subject to change should the race organisers deem it necessary to change to an alternative venue

Prologue

IMG_0449A slightly different 9.5km mostly climbing route, which culminates in views over the whole of Whakatane, Ohope and beyond. Teams will leave in 1 minute intervals with a start schedule being available at registration. Ohope is approximately 10km out of Whakatane.

Stage 1

IMG_0450The race starts in Whakatane at the Memorial Park, with a step climb out of Whakatane the legs will warm up quickly as we turn off at Burma Rd and head into the trails and forests above Whakatane. Some good riding through the forests with a few short sharp climbs bring you out onto Razorback Ridge and stunning views over the Bay and inland. We descend onto the SH2 where we are on tar for around 5km  before turning off back onto mettle/gravel roads and the final 28km to Opot0ki, and onto the Dunes Trail to finish at the awesome Therohonga Beach Camp.

Total of 68km with around 1887m climbing

Stage 2

img_0719This stage sees the route take us from Terohanga Motor Camp back into Opotoki then following the gorge road and at around 25km the route goes up the Pahiki Track a 22km gently uphill track, exiting onto the Motu Road and working its way around to the village of Motu ending at the Motu School race village.

A total of 75km with 1887m of climbing.

Stage 3

The race leave Motu School for East Hill Arboretum. Today is 68km with around 1800m climbing with amazing views and solid riding.

Stage 4

Leaves East Hill Arboretum with a loop through native bush lands and farm land working our way back to Motu School for race village 4.

Stage 5

Today is the “BIG DROP” back down from Motu School to Tehorangha Beach race village, caution is needed on the fast but sketchy downhills, one slip could end your race here. Its not all downhill, with some little breath takers to make you work to get home. Finishing along the Dunes Trail again but with the beach on your left to keep you company.

Distance 65km with around 450m climbing.

Stage 6

The final stage will be one for the stage contenders to either win the race or cement their positions, for the rest of the field it will be to enjoy what will have been an amazing weeks riding.

We leave Terohanga Motor Camp and head back to Whakatane, finishing back at Memorial Park in Whakatane waterfront where family, friends and the city will come out to support you home.
